"Fifth Floor Guardian Cocytus, at your command."
— Cocytus' Introduction

Cocytus (コキュートス) is a Floor Guardian of the 5th Floor in the Great Tomb of Nazarick. He is the creation of Warrior Takemikazuchi.

Appearance

Having an enormous body size of 2.5 meters, Cocytus has the appearance of an insect walking on two feet - a fusion between a mantis and an ant. With a tail twice as long as his height, Cocytus is covered in sharp spikes like icicles and has a strong jaw that can easily snap people's hands.

Two of his hands hold a silver halberd, while the remaining two hands hold a mace emitting black light and a crooked shape sheath which seems to be for a broadsword. In the anime, Cocytus is seen wielding a katana that he retrieved from a storage space in his fight against the lizardmen. With a breathtaking cold air, the pale blue, hardened bone armor oozes out diamond dust like bright light. His shoulders and back look like uplifted icebergs.

Personality

Cocytus has a warrior personality, respecting anyone with a fighting spirit, and the heart of a warrior. As a Floor Guardian, he is in charge of Nazarick's martial defense. Cocytus is loyal to a fault that he even allows his master to fight the rebel Shalltear alone as the former was ordered to do. This is shown when he prevented Demiurge, under Ainz's order, from interfering in Ainz's fight against Shalltear, even though he too also feared the possibility of losing his master. As Cocytus is a warrior by heart, he likes a good battle and has a sense of honor. He is not above the thought of condescending his opponents, but rather show admiration of their tenacity to fight. Unlike his isolationist and xenophobic colleagues, he is more accepting and open to the idea of allowing outsiders like the lizardmen to join Nazarick. He also appears to enjoy watching how battles play out as a bystander, excited to see what tactics and strategies his enemy use. Since coming to the New World Cocytus is continuously learning on the go, becoming more independent, learning and adjusting his knowledge of war, strife and leadership.

Though Cocytus takes pride in his position as Nazarick's defender, he is somewhat envious of his fellow Floor Guardians. Cocytus likens himself as the 'sword' of Ainz Ooal Gown, that executes his master's wishes. He thinks the only way he could prove his worth to Ainz is by actually defeating the invading forces that would pose a threat to Nazarick. Cocytus is not fond of asking for assistance in order to save face, but when the need arises, he will put his pride aside to accomplish his task. For that reason, he was willing to accept a personal defeat but not one that will disgrace and humiliate the Great Tomb of Nazarick and the 41 Supreme Beings. After losing his army to the lizardmen, he starts to reflect more on his actions and no longer wishing to obey his master's order blindly without first offering his own input on it. With the task of now administering the Lizardman Village, he has also began to shoulder more responsibilities that were expected him to carry out by his master.

Knowing his defeat, Cocytus doesn't mind if his master reprimands him. He was tolerant about it to the point that he had already prepared himself to be slain if given the order to do so. In other words, Cocytus was ready to commit suicide in order to erase the stain of his dishonor for losing to the enemy. What Cocytus felt most afraid of is the notion that he could possibly disappoint his master and be abandoned because of it. He was sensitive of his failure having an affect on the rest of his fellow NPCs that his death alone will not be enough to atone. Cocytus failing his first campaign put a mental toll on his state of mind where he tried his best to console himself from seeing such a scenario happen. When seeing Ainz go out of his way to do tasks still, Cocytus can't help but sometimes also feel sadly inadequate and incompetent as he himself couldn't be able to fulfill the work in his master's stead. He is also a person who is diligent with whatever task was given to him such as training either alone, with Ainz or with the lizardmen in swordsmanship.

Ever since the end of the Lizardmen War, he has become a teacher-like figure to the lizardmen, strictly teaching them to abide by the rules of Nazarick and how they respectfully act around Ainz. This causes Cocytus to become a more outspoken person about the decisions he needs to wisely and carefully choose as Ainz wishes him to think of ways in bettering Nazarick. As a result, he starts to develop confidence and trust in his judgement of what to do rationally during wars. Cocytus yearns for Ainz to produce an heir for Nazarick, to which he could look after and train under him. He was willing to train either Ainz or his future child about direct combat physically and how to approach these kind of foes. Based on his conversation with Shalltear, he fondly enjoys the idea of honing and crossing blades with his master in the ways of swordsmanship if permitted the chance to duel him. He takes thrill in dueling worthy warriors who caught his attention, looking to challenge their resolve head on and even possibly, recruit them if a chance presents itself.

Background

Cocytus was created by Warrior Takemikazuchi as the Floor Guardian of the 5th Floor of the Great Tomb of Nazarick. In his setting, he was programmed to possess every sort of knowledge on all of the 41 Supreme Beings' Divine Weapons. Nonetheless, Cocytus admits that he had never once seen such weapons and its powers utilized in battle before until his master Ainz Ooal Gown equipped it in combat against Shalltear Bloodfallen. Like his creator, he also sees himself as a prideful warrior who admires the fighting spirit of his foes, giving them the honor and respect they deserve when faced against the former in combat.

Whenever he emerge triumphantly against his adversary in combat, Cocytus tends to lay claim of ownership over the weapon used by them, adding it to his own collection of weapons regardless of its value. Furthermore, Cocytus would even considered keeping the corpse of the warrior he slain as trophies for safekeeping, making sure to have them kept well-preserve and intact via ice to bring back home with him. No matter how strong or weak the warrior is to him, Cocytus approach them without showing any bias or arrogance all so that the former seeks to have a proper match where they can fight to the death.

Chronology

The Undead King Arc

Main article: The Undead King Arc

When Momonga calls for the Floor Guardians to the 6th Floor, Cocytus is the second to arrive after Shalltear. During his arrival at the Amphitheater, he stops the argument between Aura and Shalltear in front of their master. As there were no intruders on the 5th Floor of Nazarick, Cocytus briefly discusses with Ainz about his free time there where he has been training in order to be ready for deployment at any time. Hearing Ainz's praise of his hard-work, Cocytus appreciates his master's kind words and feels that the task was no longer tiring for him to do. The brief discussion between the two ends when Cocytus informs his master that the last two of the Floor Guardians, Albedo and Demiurge, have arrived.

Once all of the Floor Guardians have arrived to their meeting place, Cocytus pays his respects with the rest of them to Momonga, describing the greatness of their master.[1] Right after Momonga leaves, Cocytus and his fellow Floor Guardians share what their impression is towards Ainz after feeling the power of his Despair Aura emanated by his master. Along the way, Cocytus conducts talks with Demiurge and Mare about the future of Nazarick.

At first, he thinks it is disrespectful of them to consider Momonga's successor when they are suppose to serve their master faithfully as they were created for this purpose. However, Cocytus's thoughts change the moment Demiurge reasons with him that they should also consider pledging their loyalty to Momonga's future heir as well, much to his interest. He begins daydreaming of a possible scenario where Momonga has an heir and that it starts calling him its Uncle. He happily imagines himself as a cool old uncle, loyally serving Momonga's heir, until Demiurge brings him back to reality. According to Cocytus, it is everything he has ever dreamed of happening.[2]

After he and the rest of the Floor Guardians are dismissed by the Overseer to carry out their respective duties, it is said that he was tasked with supervising Nazarick's perimeter security.[3]

The Emissary of the King Arc

Main article: The Emissary of the King Arc

Cocytus is paid a visit by Ainz's Death Knight on his floor. The Floor Guardian shows his guest hospitality, even shaking the undead's hand as they serve the same master. After the undead asks questions on who Cocytus is the friendliest with in Nazarick, he expresses that it would be Demiurge, Kyouhukou, Grant, and Gashokukochuuou. He states that there is no creation of the 41 Supreme Beings whom he do not get along, having only speak to them but not met them in person. For that reason, he wanted Ainz's permission to arrange some time in visiting them and deepen their friendship. As for his other desires, it would be to spar with Sebas Tian, Albedo, and even Ainz if permitted. Another wish is that as a loyal warrior, Cocytus wants Ainz to have an heir who he can look after and protect so that the future of the Guardians will be secure. At the same time, he wants the chance to train said heir on how to deal with any enemies such as melee attackers that may try to harm it while under his protection. Without one, he fears that Nazarick denizens will result to infighting disputes within the tomb emotionally and ideologically.[4]

The Guardians' Vacation Arc

Main article: The Guardians' Vacation Arc

When Ainz suggests giving the Guardians vacation off from their work time, Cocytus tells his master that he is doing fine and not overexerting himself, much to his master's insistence. Cocytus informs Ainz that he cannot grow any larger than his current form, telling him that he has already completed his life cycle. He recommends his master to let him use items as a substitute for sleep. In the end, he gives in to Ainz's order and decides to take a break and rest.

During a private meeting with the Guardians, he allows Sebas entry into their conference room under the pass code: All Glory in this World Belongs to Nazarick. Cocytus acknowledges that Demiurge's prediction was spot on about Ainz continuing to work while they, on the other hand, are resting. Seeing the results of Ainz's earlier health examination by Sebas, he thinks it is not a good sign for their master. He believes the color of the health exam represents some sort of meaning like "So black-hearted I'm going to die" that are unclear to him much to his confusion. Cocytus presumes that it means Ainz is under the influence of an unknown World Item's effect.

Cocytus reassures everyone that what they do for Ainz should not be taken as disloyalty as long as they are having this discussion for the sake of their master. He admits to not being able to pick up on Ainz's hidden meaning of why their master decided to give them break time, respecting Demiurge's keen insight on how that may have been the case for them.[5]

The Bloody Valkyrie Arc

Main article: The Bloody Valkyrie Arc

Cocytus is ordered to restrain Demiurge from interfering with the fight between Ainz and Shalltear. As a result, when Demiuge attempts to go and assist his master, Cocytus quickly blocks the Floor Guardian from leaving by brandishing his weapon in front of him

While doing so, he engages in conversations with Albedo and Demiurge about Ainz's decision to fight the vampire alone. Cocytus fins his master's strategy when dealing with Shalltear to be strange, much to his confusion. He reasons with Albedo that a sequential attack would be safer to do where they can attack in waves and wear down Shalltear’s HP and MP, which Ainz would have done rationally. His reasoning is met with acceptance by Demiurge as he and the demon both agree that their master was lying to them in order to hide something.

Nonetheless, Cocytus and Demiurge are told by Albedo that Ainz is a different person than he was before Shalltear's betrayal, which is why the two are advised to have faith in their master. To inform the two about Ainz's chance of defeating Shalltear, he states that it was seven to three.

When Demiurge threatens Albedo to step down as the Guardian Overseer in the event that Ainz loses the battle with Shalltear, he is angered by his colleague's words. He calls Demiurge's suggestion as treacherous since that position was given to Albedo by the 41 Supreme Beings.[6]

As he watches how the fight between Ainz and Shalltear plays out, Cocytus can't help but voice his astonishment, amazement, and excitement at seeing his master freely use the equipment and items formerly used by the Supreme Beings respectively. Although Cocytus is more confident than ever that Ainz can win the battle against Shalltear, Demiurge thinks otherwise due to his lack of warrior knowledge. Cocytus enlightens him that Shalltear abandoning her defense for an all-out attack is what he would have also done if he was in the same situation as her. Although Demiurge is impressed by his explanation, Cocytus doesn't think so highly of his knowledge as he only knows the weapons' effects and names.

With the battle almost reaching its conclusion, Cocytus acknowledges and admires how the entire fight from start to end has gone all according to Ainz's plan. After Ainz emerges victorious from his battle, he and the other Floor Guardians beg him to never do such a thing again, and to allow them to handle any future incidents that may come from here on out. Once Shalltear is revived, he advises Ainz to teach the vampire a stern lesson for messing up on not only her mission, but for betraying their master and Nazarick as well.[7]

The Show Must Go On!

Main article: The Show Must Go On! Arc

Cocytus is among the judges of the auditions in selecting the person who will play Juliet. He is in disbelief that Demiurge supports the idea for a competition between the two Floor Guardians, Albedo and Shalltear. Later on, he is seen training on the 5th Floor and is approached by Shalltear. Cocytus, knowing something suspicious is up, attempts to rebuff her. His suspicion is proven when she tries to bribe him to vote for her in the auditions. However, when she offers the role of Tybalt to him, for a chance to exchange blades with Ainz, he is tempted by the idea. Cocytus, however, being an honorable warrior, refuses and tells her to leave. During the audition, Cocytus is moved by Albedo's performance, which results in him voting for her.[8]

The Sealed Evil Tree Arc

Cocytus is summoned to the center of the Tob Forest to fight against Zy'tl Q'ae. He is ordered to fight as a team with the Floor Guardians. However, he keeps forgetting and attacks the treant twice with overwhelming force until he is reprimanded by Albedo to reevaluate their master's order.[9]

The Lizard Man Heroes Arc

Main article: The Lizard Man Heroes Arc

Cocytus is ordered by Ainz to annihilate the lizardmen and command the undead army of Nazarick. During the war council, he instructs his vassals to tidy up their table so that Entoma can prepare a spot for the set of Message Scrolls and Teleportation Scrolls to be placed on. Once Cocytus receives the scrolls, he is informed by the insect maid that they are made with the skin that Demiurge works hard to obtain. He is told to contact Ainz for feedback if any problems arises regarding their use. Nonetheless, he is bitter to see that Demiurge has pulled even further ahead of him after aiding his master with the making of these scrolls.

At the same time, Cocytus hopes to prove his devotion and loyalty to Ainz by obtaining good results where he wins the Lizardmen War under certain conditions and rules placed as restrictions on him. In other words, his task is to achieve victory using only the forces deployed to the lakeside. Cocytus begins his task, casting one of the Message Scrolls and giving his orders to Iguva=41, the commander of the undead army. He watches how the destruction of his undead forces playes out from behind the scene as the Lizardmen Alliance devastates it in warfare. Cocytus’ opinion of the Lizardmen goes up by a notch, and he concludes that they are not a foe that can be instantly destroyed. That being the case, Cocytus figures the only way he can win the war against them is to draw out the battle. Cocytus listens to the suggestions offer by his vassals, borrowing their wisdom in order to dictate what his next course of action will be before then casting another Message Scroll once more to the undead commander.

Witnessing how his army is almost close to being defeated by the lizardmen, Cocytus uses a Message Scroll to call on Demiurge and request his advice. Cocytus is offered several hints and cues by Demiurge on why Ainz gave him such low-tier undead forces to begin with. From his conversation with Demiurge, Cocytus learns that he must divine his master’s intent and adapt his methods to the situation, not follow his master's orders blindly. It is for the first time that Cocytus has started to contemplate his master’s true underlying motives. Cocytus's brief discussion with Demiurge about Ainz's true objectives for him comes to an end when Entoma stops them from discussing any further.

He deploys his trump card, the undead commander Iguva=41, onto the battlefield to engage the lizardmen in combat. Seeing Iguva=41 being destroyed and his army being defeated by the lizardmen, he realizes that his mission to annihilate the lizardmen has failed. Although he is deeply impressed by the lizardmen's victory during the war, Cocytus is surprised at his defeat and feels ashamed for losing. This leaves him no other choice but to return to Nazarick with a sense of defeat. While walking forward to the Throne Room, he thinks to himself what his fate may be and how the last Supreme Being remaining will forsake him, making the former feel ashamed in fear for what is to come next.[10] Cocytus apologizes for his late arrival to the gathering place and is then introduced to Victim, a fellow Floor Guardian he did not know of until now. Once Ainz and Albedo arrive, he and the rest of the Floor Guardians are guided by Demiurge to the Throne Room where the two await them.

During the meeting, he prepares to apologize, but is stopped by Ainz and Albedo. He is ordered to explain what his feeling are as a commander of a defeated army. As a result, Cocytus describes to his master that he is feeling deeply remorseful for his own inability to achieve victory over the lizardmen, along with losing Ainz's personal undead creation. Unable to give the proper answer his master wants, Cocytus is asked once more by Ainz how he felt when commanding the battle and what he learned from it. Hearing this, Cocytus understands what Ainz expected from him, explaining the various ways to his master what he should have done beforehand to defeat the lizardmen. However, Cocytus acknowledges that he did not do any of that mentioned by him as he assumed his forces alone were enough to overwhelm them.

After carefully analyzing his failure and hearing that his master wants him to wipe out the lizardmen as punishment, he hesitates on following through with that order, refusing the thought of doing so. Hence, Cocytus asks Ainz if they could show mercy to the lizardmen and take them in under Nazarick's rule. He reasons that they can be used to breed future warriors powerful enough to serve Nazarick while instilling to them a strong sense of loyalty. However, since this is not sufficient reasoning to convince his master, Cocytus is assisted by Demiurge, who reasons with Ainz that they can use the lizardman to experiment on Nazarick's rulership. With Demiurge's idea now put forward, Ainz accepts it and allows Cocytus to spare the lizardmen.

In order to redeem his failure and as punishment, Cocytus is given the order by Ainz to rule over the lizardmen without fear and terror while instilling a deeply-rooted loyalty to Nazarick within them. Cocytus even receives permission from his master to call on the aid of others, which will require considerable resources, manpower, and rations. Once the meeting is over and his master leaves, the first thing Cocytus does is express his gratitude to Demiurge, admitting that the lizardmen would have been exterminated if not for the demon's intervention. Cocytus is informed by Demiurge that the reason their master approved of his suggestion in the first place is because Ainz himself had foreseen and anticipated such a development happening.[11]

Later on, he is ordered to first do battle alone against the lizardman heroes. Along the way, he cleaves a path through the forest to find the lizardmen, cutting down several gigantic trees that fall to the ground with earthshaking tremors at its wake. Since his master is watching over him and his battle, he ensures the lizardmen that they will get a chance to shine. Before the battle happens though, he creates two pillars of ice ahead of time, warning any lizardman who cross it must be prepared to forfeit their lives when fighting him. Seeing that only Shasuryu Shasha, Zaryusu Shasha, Zenberu Gugu, Kyuku Zuzu, Sukyu Juju, and fifty seven lizardmen have the resolve to fight, Cocytus then gestures these group of lizardmen to begin doing battle with him. Cocytus decides to cull their numbers first by vanquishing the fifty seven lizardmen with his [Frost Aura] skill. When this is done, he starts dealing with the five strongest lizardmen and the two Swamp Elementals simultaneously, taking care to slay them one by one until he emerges as the victor of the bout.

After that quick battle, where Cocytus kills all of them with his hands, he returns to Ainz's side and is informed by his master that he cannot rule over the lizardmen through fear. Because Cocytus emerged victorious from his battle against the lizardman, he is now in charge of administering the lizardman tribes and fostering deeply-rooted loyalty to Nazarick. Cocytus is expected by his master to cultivate the growth of talented members of their species. When his master plans to turn the corpses of the lizardmen slain in battle into raw materials, he successfully persuades Ainz to resurrect the strongest lizardmen back to life rather than go through with that idea. He reasons that not only do these lizardmen have the warrior spirit to grow even stronger, but it will also allow his master the chance to conduct practical experiments with resurrection magic on them. Cocytus later brings in Crusch Lulu as the representative of the lizardmen to handle talks of negotiations with his master regarding the fate of their species.[12]

The Two Leaders Arc

Main article: The Two Leaders Arc

At some point after his war with the lizardmen, Cocytus has a disagreement with the species over their suggestion of returning to their former village to fish. Knowing their reason for that is due to food shortages from not having enough preys to hunt or trap, Cocytus, with help from Demiurge, proposes the idea of importing rations from Nazarick and distributing it to them using Cauldron of the Daghdha. Later on, he begins studying methods to ensure a sustainable food supply. The solution he discovers is the fish farms built by Zaryusu. After that, he discusses the matter with Demiurge and begins to build superior fish farms.

Cocytus leaves Snowball Earth, 5th Floor to his servants, the Frost Virgins, to defend in his stead while he departs from Nazarick to the Lizardman Village. Once there, it is decided that Cocytus and the lizardmen will to go on a mission together. According to Shasuryu, Cocytus brings several of his subordinates and several dozen trainee lizardmen on his expedition to subjugate the Toadmen in the northern part of the Great Lake. After the conquest, he returns to the Lizardman Village and receives a message from Mare that Ainz has invited him and the male Floor Guardians to take a bath with him. Cocytus accepts the invitation and later heads over to Nazarick and meet up with his master, Demiurge, and Mare.

While proceeding to the Spa Resort Nazarick baths with his master on the 9th Floor, he notices that there are fewer Eight Edge Assassins around in the tomb. He is informed by Ainz that they're at the E-Rantel inn with Narberal Gamma. Hearing this, he shows his concern for the battle maid, knowing that she is alone by herself and treated as bait for any enemy to come and attack. Finding it hard to keep his cool emotionally, he asks his master several questions about whether the enemies will take the bait in a way that enables them to mobilize their forces afterward. He learns that Ainz has every intention of making the one responsible for Shalltear suffer as much as the latter did to her.

In addition, Cocytus informs Ainz of his plan to temporarily return to his position of guarding Nazarick since the matters which require his personal presence at the lakeside have all been concluded. Learning that Ainz still has some tasks to do, he finds it hard to accept how his master is persistently handling work while NPCs like them are supposed to do it for him. To keep his master at ease, he reassures Ainz that he is the ruler of Nazarick and it is his duty to obey every word he says. At the same time, he feels gloomy, knowing his inability and incapability to assist Ainz on his tasks like Demiurge can. Cocytus is consoled by Ainz when the latter comforts him, saying that he will one day be on par with Demiurge as long as he continues learning by doing other things like ruling the Lizardman Village.

While waiting for Demiurge and Mare to arrive in the Spa Resort Nazarick with them, Cocytus and his master are met by the female Floor Guardians, including Albedo in particular, who attempt to assault him once more. Cocytus cuts his way between Ainz and Albedo, protecting him from her attempt to assault their master. He is shortly later joined by Demiurge and Mare, who arrive to see their master being troubled by Albedo's action, readying his halberd to do battle with the Overseer if she continues to act that way. Nonetheless, before things escalate even further, the Floor Guardians are reprimanded by Ainz to stop this nonsense and head to their respective men and women's baths.

While bathing, he expresses his fondness for taking a cold bath while others convey their views on what they like. Cocytus' exoskeleton body is discussed by the Floor Guardians, much to the latter's pride and annoyance of thinking he is naked all this time. Due to the interruption of the female Floor Guardians, who are attacked by the Lion Golem, he and his fellow male Floor Guardians are ordered to assist them in stopping the entity. Although Cocytus is initially confused on whether it is a Area Guardian and why it is in the women's bath, he learns from Ainz that that golem's voice is Luci★Fer.[13]

The Dark Hero's Story Arc

Main article: The Dark Hero's Story Arc

During the Floor Guardians' meeting on figuring out what to ask Ainz as compensation, clothing is brought up. Cocytus says clothes are unnecessary for him, earning him a tease from Aura that he is naked. He later suggests asking Ainz for weapons as he is interested in adding to his collection and also to provide new equipment for the lizardmen under his charge. When Aura wants to have Rororo, Cocytus furiously denies it, stating he will not allow his charges' property to be taken and will even bring the issue before Ainz's attention should Aura escalate it. He, however, considers Aura's request for keeping the hydra's children.[14]

Ainz Raises Money Arc

Main article: Ainz Raises Money Arc

Cocytus is present with his fellow Floor Guardians at a meeting with their master Ainz Ooal Gown. During the meeting, it’s revealed that he has requested a voucher to fight with Ainz as his reward. In addition, he formally requests as the Overseer of the lizardman to prevent the seizure of Rororo by Aura, which Ainz deems reasonable.

Like the others, he is given three gold coins to be used as his salary by Ainz. In the next meeting, he tells his liege how he made the lizardman convert the gold coins into tribal jewelry.

Ainz, disappointed that his subordinates refuse to part with the money, gives them orders them to spend. Finding little interest in the goods offered in E-Rantel, the Floor Guardians seek advice from Sebas Tian and Narberal Gamma. Noticing the fan goods of Blue Rose, it prompts the Guardians to use the gold to create their own brand of fan goods based on Momon the Dark Hero.

Later, he presents a "You Can Be Momon Too" Kit to show to his master after purchasing it.[15]

The Men in the Kingdom Arc

Main article: The Men in the Kingdom I and The Men in the Kingdom II Arc

Ainz is tasked with preparing the funds for rebuilding and financial aid for the Lizardman Village, in accordance to Cocytus’ wishes.[16]

Cocytus is present with Ainz as a witness when they are questioning Sebas about his possible betrayal. Cocytus keeps his distance from Sebas, maintaining the ideal range for him as the warrior to launch an attack. He and Demiurge direct their murderous intent at Sebas and Tuare until they are reprimanded by Ainz to stop while their master continues his interrogation on the two. No longer by his master's side, Cocytus shifts his position to stand behind Tuare, awaiting orders. When Ainz orders Sebas to kill Tuare, Cocytus is ordered to interdict the butler's strike beforehand, judging that the attack was intended to be instantly fatal. After verifying Sebas' loyalty, Cocytus is asked for his opinion concerning his decision to allow Tuare to join Nazarick, which he has no objections to.

When Sebas is given alone time with him and Demiurge, Cocytus tells the former that he does not mind the butler addressing him in a formal manner. Seeing Demiurge and Sebas squabble over the fate of Tuare, he tells the two to mindfully keep their act and composure together in the face of their master before them.[17]

The Invaders of the Large Tomb Arc

Main article: The Invaders of the Large Tomb Arc

Based on the Pleiades' brief discussion about the intruders, Cocytus appears to be leading the command and overseeing the battle with them. The Pleiades, while watching from afar, witness the downfall of the invaders and note how everything is easily going according to Cocytus' prediction.[18]

While this is happening, Cocytus is tasked with evaluating Ainz's performance as a warrior during his master's fight with Foresight.[19]

The Magic Caster of Destroy Arc

Main article: The Magic Caster of Destroy Arc

Cocytus is present in the Throne Room when Ainz Ooal Gown welcomes the imperial delegation from the Empire. Later, he and the rest of his fellow Floor Guardians hold a meeting with Ainz, where he discusses his impressions of the Baharuth Empire and its Emperor. Like Shalltear, Cocytus thinks Nazarick doesn't necessarily require a just cause to conquer the Empire until Demiurge reasonably explains it to him in details about the extent of their master's plan. Hearing that the Empire is plotting to have them betray each other, Cocytus believes the Emperor does not know what the meaning of loyalty is. When deciding on a ruler-type name suitable for their master, he suggests addressing Ainz Ooal Gown as the Sorcerer King for their newly founded nation.[20]

The Ruler of Conspiracy Arc

Main article: The Ruler of Conspiracy Arc

Cocytus is ordered by Ainz to send a lizardman over to where Hamsuke is at so that they can undergo training together.[21]

The Craftsman of Dwarf Arc

Main article: The Craftsman of Dwarf Arc

According to Ainz, Cocytus is not only in charge of the Great Lake, but is now in charge of the Great Forest of Tob, which also makes him a project leader of sorts. Entoma informs Ainz that Cocytus wishes to send over a Lizardman as emissary to him with a report concerning the village’s status and seeks his permission to open a Gate, which their master permits. He is told by the lizardman Kyuku Zuzu that Cocytus wishes to present something to his master.

Cocytus greets and pays his deep respect to Ainz when he comes to the Great Lake to talk with Zenberu on the Dwarf Kingdom. When Ainz offers a reward to him, Cocytus states that there is no need for one as loyalty to his master is sufficient enough for the Floor Guardian. Not what his master wants to hear, Cocyus is given a new order to tell him what he wants within a week’s time, limited to material objects, which he obliges to do, much to his distress.

Later, Cocytus presents the lizardman Zenberu to Ainz for questioning as commanded by his master. He appears clearly outraged when Zenberu looks to discern Ainz's intention, seeing that the lizardman is hesitant to answer his master's questions about the Dwarf Kingdom. Nevertheless, Cocytus's frustration with the lizardman is held back at the order of his liege. Under Ainz's order, from this moment forward, Cocytus is forbidden to harm Zenberu's friends in the village even if the lizardman chooses to oppose his master.

After the misunderstandings are cleared up, Ainz informs him of his intentions to go to the Dwarf Kingdom and forge diplomatic relations. Also, Cocytus is willing to offer himself up to his master so Ainz can sit on his back as a seat, mimicking Shalltear's situation as punishment for having the lizardman act disrespectful towards him. Cocytus asks his master if what he did pleases him or not.

Hearing his response, Cocytus goes on to state whether his master prefer either him or Shalltear as a fitting chair for Ainz, to which the latter responds that the vampire has done it slightly better than he did. However, Cocytus is not without acknowledgement from his master as Ainz considers his sitting position to have advantages to it, noting the cold, cool sensation he emanate would be best on summer days. He informs Ainz that he plans to practice this sitting position for when he must someday bear his master upon his back. In a way, his action impress the lizardmen of Ainz's power over him.[22]

When Ainz asks for his opinion on whether children of different races can get along well with each other peacefully, Cocytus believes that what he suggested should be possible under his will.

Before setting out, Cocytus is wary of the potential dangers and wants to personally escort the Sorcerer King during his journey to the Dwarf Kingdom, suggesting to his master that he is willing to mobilize his forces at any time. However, Ainz convinces him that should he be in peril or negotiations deteriorate, Cocytus will be called upon to his side on the battlefield if the situation arise.[23]

Nazarick Mythology Arc

Cocytus attends a meeting to create a mythology of his master in order to solidify his hold over the masses. In his myth story, he uses the tone of a classic Japanese children folk tale. Taking place in a small town, a boy witnesses the destruction of all he holds dear at the hands of monsters. The boy defeats the monsters using a mysterious power, becoming a hero to the people. A sorcerer named Ainz Ooal Gown appears before the boy, claiming to be his father and has been using him to lead the foolish humans in order to stabilize the peace. Seeing his work complete, he disappears, but promises to return to guide the humans once again. The Guardians then comment that Cocytus' story will be popular among children and adventurers.[24]

One of the Greater Doppelgängers in Erich String Orchestra tells Ainz about Cocytus requesting that they record their battle with him. This way, Cocytus believes that everyone in the Great Tomb of Nazarick can learn from the battle, which his master permits the group to do.

While fighting Jaldabaoth and Erich String Orchestra disguised as his demon maids, Ainz recalls the practice he had with Cocytus, the method of evading his opponent by closing in with them several hundred times. Ainz notes how one in every ten times, if Cocytus was not attacking in earnest, he could completely slip past them. He remembers Cocytus saying that a good warrior would never make such incredibly flashy and telegraphed attacks.[25]

In the Audience Room, with permission from the Floor Guardian Overseer, Cocytus is present when Shalltear brings in Hilma Cygnaeus to present Ainz a witness who can explain their questions about the attack on the Sorcerer Kingdom's trade caravan of grains. Every Floor Guardian, including Cocytus, during the meeting approves of the punishment Ainz has suggested for Hilma Cygnaeus to do. When that matter is concluded, discussion about Philip resumes where it left off while the Overseer explains their strategy for the Fall of the Re-Estize Kingdom.

With Ainz permitting questions to be asked by the Floor Guardians, Cocytus is the second person after Aura to question the strategy of their operation. Cocytus wants to know why they didn't make use of the other noblemen besides Philip during the beginning of the operation. Demiurge answers Cocytus' question, stating that they did recruit someone like that already by blackmailing Philip's father, Baron Montserrat. It wasn't just that nobleman alone, but Demiurge also supports Cocytus' way of thinking, choosing to spare an expendable portion of the nobility who are at least somewhat capable and worthy for Ainz to rule over.

When Demiurge asks if the punishment should be on Philip alone, Cocytus refuses to have it just end there and suggests the same punishment to also be imposed on that nobleman's master.[26]

A month later, after the Sorcerer Kingdom's declaration of war against the Re-Estize Kingdom, Cocytus contributes to the campaign by destroying a city. He also employs a tactic to successfully conquer several cities without problems using an undead army borrowed from his master. His work is commended by Ainz during a meeting with the Floor Guardians in Nazarick.

Upon seeing the death of the Death Knight and the Death Warrior by the flying armor giant, Cocytus is among those besides Demiurge and Shalltear to discover the reason why Ainz did not sent so many forces into the city of E-Naeurl. This causes Demiurge to praise him and Shalltear for understanding the reason behind why their master made the decision he did by sending in weak forces.[27]

Once Ainz arrives at the Re-Estize capital with his 10,000 undead army, Cocytus happens to be present by his master's side alongside the other Floor Guardians. When Albedo informs Ainz that they should decline the envoy Zanac's request, he disagrees with her suggestion, reasoning that it would reflect badly on the people's impression of Ainz by choosing not to confront the human. It is also revealed by Ainz that Cocytus is the one in charge of laying siege to the capital. Since Cocytus will be involved, Ainz has given the Floor Guardian the order to watch out for the Razor Edge sword later that is currently in the hands of Brain Unglaus.

After Ainz returns from his meeting with Zanac, Cocytus has a discussion with both Aura and Mare about the upcoming siege of the capital. With Cocytus as the leading commander alongside Mare, who is second-in-command after him, he and the Floor Guardian are permitted to use the full extent of their abilities. Not only that, but he and Mare are also told by their master to not let any citizen of the Re-Estize Kingdom go unharmed once the battle starts. Once the battle begins, Cocytus and his Frost Virgins set off from the front he has established in front of the capital. Cocytus is in charge of laying the capital under siege and upon raiding it, he is later confronted by the warrior Brain. Accompanied by his Frost Virgins, he introduces himself to Brain while the latter does the same.

Respecting Brain's resolve and warrior spirit, Cocytus strikes his Decapitation Fang into the ground and takes out his God Slaying Emperor Blade before assuming a battle stance against him. Cocytus closes the distance between himself and Brain, who is now within his range, and easily ends the warrior's life with one single slash from his weapon. Although the two attack each other at the same time, Cocytus emerges unscathed from the blow, as Brain's blade was not able to reach him. After swinging the God Slaying Emperor Blade, Cocytus shakes off the blood and fat from the katana and returns it back to his Item Box. With the one-on-one fight over, Cocytus pulls his halberd out from the ground and examines Brain's body.

Once he takes Brain's katana weapon and commands his Frost Virgins to freeze the warrior's corpse, Cocytus resumes his walk to Ro-Lente Castle. After reaching and getting inside Ro-Lente Castle, he proceeds to stride towards the throne room. Cocytus enters the room and stands by his master's side as he sits upon the throne. While this is happening, Cocytus orders his Frost Virgins to stand watch outside the throne room and be on the lookout for Climb, instructing them to not harm the human and allow him entry. Due to the success of the operation ending with the Fall of the Re-Estize Kingdom, Cocytus is also one of the Floor Guardians to have fulfilled his role in the mission without any problem.[28]

Cocytus was reported to occasionally manage the lizardmen, but since the establishment of the Sorcerer Kingdom, besides his duties as Floor Guardians, Cocytus has received additional outside duties. Also at the request of Ainz Ooal Gown he has begun training him in arms and also helping to sense killing intent.[29]

Mass for the Dead Arc

Main article: Mass for the Dead Arc

When the Great Tomb of Nazarick transferred to the New World. Cocytus was among those that were killed in the transition. The Floor Guardian was of course revived, but was leveled to a reduced state. He and Shalltear were given orders to handle the defense for Nazarick in case of another enemy attack. Cocytus wasted no time in training intent of reclaiming his strength. At one point the protagonist interviewed him on what he would do on a break, to which he answered he would continue training. Afterwards he attended a meeting in the Round Table Room where Momonga announced a new work system that required holidays.[30] Cocytus would not just train by himself by sought others such as Aura, Mare and Sebas Tian who also wished to recover their original levels.[31] He would also act as a voice of comfort to Shalltear Bloodfallen who was feeling depressed on her loss of power and guilt that she failed to protect Nazarick leading to its near collapse. While Cocytus did not believe in using shortcuts he advised the vampire to speak with the protagonist as he had the insight for such things.[32]

It was not say that Cocytus had no insecurities of his own. As during his training the Floor Guardian would be drawn to the unpleasant memory of his revival, yet was unable to remember the events leading to his death. To take his mind away and quicken the path to recover his strength, he had both Narberal and Lupusregina do mock battles against him. The intensity of the battles became intense that Cocytus allowed real damage to his partners but also on himself and refusing to rest. The intense training regime was reported to Albedo who reported it to Momonga. The Overlord was a bit disturbed by the activity and thus met to speak with Cocytus to engage with in a game using his skeleton summons who would fight Cocytus to claim his armband whilst he worked to claim there's. Cocytus lost the first match with Momonga in a battle of wits. Realizing he failed, he sought help from Demiurge to help him understand how he lost. From the demon it was revealed that Cocytus lost due to lacking "strategy" and "tactics". Understanding Cocytus went to the library to seek the protagonist who gave him a book to aid him on improving his military strategy. After studying the book he uses the knowledge he gained to challenge Momonga again and bests his summons. Having improved and made his master proud, Cocytus resumed his training regime though this time with breaks.[33]

Cocytus would help another NPC in Nazarick, Lupusregina who was just recently berated by Momonga for her blunder. Knowing the feeling of failing Cocytus consoled her, but encouraged her not to sink in defeat but strive to make herself grow. He then directs her to the protagonist who he believes can aid the maid.[34] Cocytus would also be sent out on a mission by Albedo with the protagonist, Slimeko, Aura and Narberal to located the Legendary Tree for Momonga's cherry blossom viewing. When the group finally located the tree it was Cocytus that chopped it down and brought it back to Nazarick.[35] At the time of Neuronist Painkill's revival, Cocytus personally welcomed her back to the land of the living, giving her an apology for the delay in her return.[36]

The experimentation done to the Crack on the 10th Floor by Demiurge would yield some unexpected results leading to the appearance of some visitors from another world. Cocytus and Sebas Tian would be on the 6th Floor when the encountered one of the visitors, who claimed to be a goddess. Seeing that she was looking a bit down they invited her to join them for some tea and allowed her to observe them clean the floor of the Chaos Beasts. After bonding a bit the three then headed to the bar for some drinks.[37]

Cocytus and the other Floor Guardians would later partake in a mock battle against Momonga in Fake Nazarick. They were to defend the dungeon from an invasion against their master. Cocytus was stationed with Shalltear on the 1st to 3rd Floors but are eventually drawn to the 6th Floor where they try to retake in from the undead summons. He and the Floor Guardians faced off against Momonga but were defeated, but they won the war as they prevented Momonga from claiming the objective within the alloted time.[38]

The 5th Floor Guardian would encounter various crisises, such as when Pumpkin Monsters infested Nazarick all many floors of the dungeon forcing the warrior to exterminate them. Later he and his allies had to content with a Giant Jack-O-Lantern on his floor and save a possessed Foire.[39] On his second mission outside the dungeon, Cocytus was recruited to help the protagonist and Slimeko aid a lizardman named Zaryusu Shasha to determine why the Great Lake was increasing in temperature. During the journey he bonded with the demi-human mostly due to being warriors and fought side by side against several Giant Lizards that were discovered to have eaten Heatstones and the main cause of the lake's rising temperature. The stones were brought back to Nazarick as payment and Cocytus and his colleagues enjoyed the warmth they provided in the baths at Spa Resort Nazarick.[40]

On the road to recovering his power, Cocytus allowed Demiurge to use him in his experiments cocerning Prismatic Crystals. Though the ore helped to increase his chances of leveling up it was determined that actual fighting experience was required. Thus to help Cocytus, Momonga organized the Nazarick Fighting Tournament. Cocytus created a tema composed of himself, Lupusregina Beta, CZ2128 Delta, and Narberal Gamma. The Floor Guardian defeated the teams such as Bloody Maidens and Gott mit uns. At the last conclusive battle, Cocytus dueled with the Corpse Guardian on his own and after achieving vctory was declared the winner of the tournament. As his reward he was permitted to become Momonga's bodyguard.[41]

While on patrol in the 6th Floor he, Entoma Vasilissa Zeta and CZ2128 Delta heard the commotion from the canteen as the maids there were preparing Christmas Cakes for the Christmas party.[42] Cocytus would fall victim to the mental control of Shiramochi-ō who directed the Cocytus to lead the Pleiades to Fake Nazarick. There the dungeon was altered into its own space, and Cocytus was placed as the guard at the Takemikazuchi Shrine along with Narberal. Under the White Mochi King's spell, the two refused Momonga passage when he came to investigate unless the undead and his party defeated them. Once the duo were defeated Momonga were allowed passage to confront Shiramochi-ō. After the entity was defeated, presumably Cocytus was freed from the spell but had no recollection.[43]

However Shiramochi-ō was not killed, but used his power to rewind time though at the expense of his memories and power. A new loop of the events occurred, with some alterations. Cocytus was once again being manipulated to guard a space created by Shiramochi-ō, though it took its true form of the Bishamonten Shrine. The reason for this was made clear by Shiro, who was in reality a regressed Shiramochi-ō, when he explained that Cocyctus was made guardian of the shrine as he was similar to one of the Seven Lucky Gods who created him. He was eventually defeated by Momonga before he allowed his group to pass and rewarded them the sansageki. Once Shiro was killed by Momonga the spell over him was made null.[44]

Daily life in Nazarick would become more interesting as it began to receive more guests from other worlds. In one group, Cocytus became familiar to one of the visitors she she shared an affinity for ice magic.[45] When a new set of visitors arrived to Nazarick, Cocytus's home was visited by Albedo and Momonga. The visit was prompted by Albedo who was taking dating lessons from one of their guests and wanted to use the cold temperature to get close to Momonga's heart.[46] He maintained a close eye on one of them and kept guard when they spoke with Momong, Demiurge and Pandora's Actor.[47]

Cocytus would go on another mission outside the dungeon and into the Great Forest of Tob, to search for the true Legendary Tree as it was determined by Demiurge that the one he cut down was just an offspring of it. Rather than cutting it down and killing it as a decoration, Momonga ordered it to be brought back alive as it could be repurposed to act as a central command node for their Enhanced Treant security network. When the party located the tree and fought through the zombified treants guarding the Parent Tree, Cocytus used [Vidyārāja Strike] on it, knocking out of the ground, stunning it long enough for Demiurge to administer a toxin to pacify it. After it was dragged to an underground cavern and coerced into servitude, Nazarick held a Yozakura there, where Cocytus had to physically intervene and break up a tense fight between Demiurge and Sebas Tian.[48]

Cocytus would join in Demiurge and Momonga's experiments on the Crack on the 10th Floor, and had to defend them against some new visitors from the Crack. The two intruders were nearly defeated by both Cocytus and Demiurge, but they were rescued by a mysterious skeleton knight rider who fled with the two on his mount. Cocytus was ordered to stay his hand and not pursue as Momonga sense that the knight was not an enemy they wanted to fight.[49] Other more friendly visitors would emerge from the Crack as time passed and Cocytus would befriend those that shared his warrior mindset.[50]

At the establishment of the Miyoshi-kun Cup, Cocytus was assigned to act as part of the security detail while the event was taking place.[51] The Floor Guardian would be charged with overseeing the heatstone mine at the Great Lake area and maintaining formal relations with the Lizardmen Alliance. He proved his leadership skill in a crisis when the Great Lake area experience a severe cold wave that forced many monsters from the mountains to migrate to the area and threaten to freeze the area and it inhabitants. Cocytus took he initiative by ordering all supplies of heatstones be distributed and launch a defense against the invading monsters. He sent for help to Nazarick explaining the seriousness of the situation. Members of the Pleiades were sent to investigate the cold wave whilst Cocytus continued to defend the lizardmen from attacks. Once the cause of the cold front was found and eliminated, Coctus returned to Nazarick to partake in the second Christmas party and helped cut a large fish that was being served as a main dish.[52]

Nazarick would be paid a visit by a group of visitors from another world that visited Nazarick a second time. Cocytus met one of them who was a new face to the NPCs of Nazarick. Though their encountered had Cocytus being frozen by mistaken though the incident was not harmful to the Guardian. Before Cocytus left to continue his duties, the girl requested his help. What she explained to him was beyond his expectation as she claimed to be from an alternate future that saw the destruction of Nazarick by a clone of one of her friends. Though he originally believed that she was lying, the girl possess knowledge on Nazarick that a new visitor like her should not have known.

This in mind he reported to Momonga on the events of the future and with his helped devised a plan to prevent it from coming to pass. Cocytus bonded with the girl who warned him of the events of the future, sparring with her and even helped her get her love interest to date her. As instructed Cocytus tailed the visitors when they toured E-Rantel and their leader while he dated Leinas Rockbruise. When the clone attacked the party after rendering the city's populace asleep, Cocytus came out of hiding and confronted her driving her away. He quickly left the city to avoid detection from the inhabitants. The next phase of the plan led to drawing the clone out in the Tob Forests where the viistors managed to calm her down, but unfortunately it was revealed that the clone was being used as puppet by a malevolent entity known as the Grim Reaper who used the clone's body to attack them. Cocytus shielded the visitors form the reaper's attacked long enough for the clone to regain control and allow the visitors to seal her ending her threat.[53][54]

Cocytus would later be called upon to act as security for a choclate contest on the 9th Floor at Momonga's request.[55] After the protagonist succeeded in gaining the hearts of the Tripartite Alliance and was about to be made the Guardian of E-Rantel, ideas were thrown about by the Floor Guardians and Momonga on how to heal the hearts of the people in the city. The idea of using idol singers was suggested which was supported by Cocytus and Aura leading to the creation of LittleMass.[56] During the idol group's second campaign drive he found a handshake event taking place in the canteen, where all the general maids were flocking to get autographs signed by ACidity and Alkaline. The Floor Guardian along with Mare would be part of an impromptu live idol show and did a mock battle with the two idols in the corridor of the 9th Floor. At the finale in the Amphitheater he assisted in the show by producing mist for Momonga's entrance on stage.[57]

After the success of the idol plan, Cocytus attended another meeting to discuss implementing it in the form of an adventurer tournament in E-Rantel. Cocytus noted the advantages of the event as it would allow Nazarick to gather information on not just the current adventurers but also ones that wished to be become adventurers. In concerns of finding someone to partner with Shalltear Bloodfallen to infiltrate the tournament, Kyuko was deemed the perfect agent to send by Aura. However Cocytus made one point that Kyuko's tail would be a giveaway that she wasn't human. Though the detail seemed to disqualify her, it a a minor nuisance as her features as a non-human would be little issue in E-Rantel which became a multi-racial city.[58]

At some point the Treasurer would inform Cocytus about the usefulness of swimsuits. Taking note that they were best suited for aquatic environments, this prompted Cocytus to request them to be used by the Pleiades to support the lizardmen in the future. To test their viability against swimsuits produced by Tsuibayaya a performance test was called to take place. The performance test began with the Pleiades trying them out in combat to test their different capabilities whilst he watched with Demiurge and Albedo. Shalltear who arrived at the scene of the test leads Albedo to believe that Momonga's approval of the swimsuit performance test is a sign that a new "Trial of Love" has begun.

They connect the numerous random remarks made by Momonga and come to that conclusion with even Demiurge following their line of thought. Cocytus is the last to be convince, until he is told that the "Trial of Love" will select a Queen and hence a successor to Nazarick would be imminent causing his doubts to wash away. Together they convince Momonga to approve a "Nazarick Swimsuit Athletic Meet" thinking they are following his secret plan and once it gets approve, Cocytus and Demiurge head to Ashurbanipal to do research on all swimsuit related material and activities and their relations to idols.

As they study the texts, Cocytus confesses to Demiurge on his doubt towards Nazarick's agenda. Ever since he met with a new lizardman chieftain named Crusch Lulu and hearing the adulations of the lizardmen he worries that Nazarick may be exploiting their allies. Though he is ashamed that he sounds like a traitor he asks Demiurge to punish him. Demiurge to the contrary is not angry but relieved to hear some feedback from Cocytus on this topic as it would be better for his peer to let such thoughts out than hold it in. The demon makes several points of how the lizardmen have benefited from Nazarick's umbrella citing that he should focus on the good to feel less guilty.

Cocytus would be absent for most of the meet as he was relegated to security of the dungeon while the general maids watched the competition. He did appear at the last competition to serve as Momonga's mount alongside Neuronist Painkill in the "Mixed Gender Water Cavalry". Led by Momonga Cocytus carried his master against the teams led by Shalltear and Albedo. Momonga's team eventually lost when the two women began working together, managing to knock Neuronist out forcing Cocytus to carry Momonga by himself for a short time until both women pushed his master into the water and ending the match. When the competition ended in a cumulative tie, he along with the audience accepted the results and viewed it as a intense but fun game, commending both teams on their efforts.

He would be present in a meeting with the other Guardians to discuss the success of the event. After Momonga gave all the NPCs his praise for their effort and his love to them, Cocytus witnessed Albedo and Shalltear clinging to Momonga at the meeting and initially thought that they were doing another "Trial of Love". To restore some decorum to the gathering he and five other Guardians had to pull the women off Momonga. Though even with their combined strength the Guardians were not strong enough until the Eight-Edge Assassins came to help.[59]

The Floor Guardian was present in a meeting to discuss of a new development that a human girl named Anne was reported by Shalltear in the field to be possibly as strong as her. Cocytus was doubtful of such a claim that there was someone as strong as Shalltear, but did agreed with the current consensus that they should not let their guard on this new entity and proceed to continue with observation.[60]

Cocytus would be called to the field once more to act as an escort to Momonga's entourage when they went to the Katze Plains to retrieve Shalltear Bloodfallen. While surveying the area Cocytus noted that there was evidence that a massive battle. When Shalltear was located, Momonga attempted to use his Shooting Star to free her from her mind-controlled state. It failed and the Overlord ordered everyone to retreat back to Nazraick. Once on the 1st Floor Cocytus asked why they retreated and was informed that Shalltear was being affected by a World Item. Though it was unclear to what exactly happened Cocytus managed to deduce that he spell over Shalltear was incomplete as her attacker would have never allowed her to remain in the plains if their spell totally controlled her.

The Floor Guardian was kept in reserve in a plan to defeat Shalltear. After Shalltear beaten an army of summons led by the protagonist, Albedo and Mare, Cocytus stepped in to hold her off from finishing his friends. He distracted her long enough for Aura to pull her into a space created by Depiction of Nature and Society where Momonga was waiting to kill her.[61] Days later Cocytus attended another meeting to hear about Iguva=41, Lupusregina and CZ2128 Delta successful infiltration of Six Arms and how they foiled a smuggling operation by an alliance of nobles in the Empire. There he also learned of Momonga's next target to be the Dwarf Kingdom.[62]

During a phenomenon that caused the day to be extended, Cocytus like many of the Floor Guardians believed it to be part of a prophecy written by one of the Supreme Beings found by the protagonist. Additionally he believed Momonga knew the exact details of the prophecy due to the protagonist's pareidolia of Momonga's actions. After the situation was resolved Cocytus attended the moon-viewing party and was in conversation with Pandora's Actor. The two praised Momonga's foresight seeing him in a higher light as an omniscient being.[63]

Cocytus would be present at a gathering in the Round Table Room. There he listened to Albedo's proposition to host a formal Halloween Festival in Nazarick. He admired Momonga when his master tried to take the blame for Shalltear's betrayal when the latter opted to not participate in the festival. During the festivities, Cocytus took part in the defense training part of the activity, acting as the team leader against the 'evil witches' that had invaded Nazarick and rescued their hostage, Neuronist, alongside Entoma on the 5th Floor.[64]

When a trio of magical girls came to Nazarick through another of Momonga's summoning experiment, Cocytus aided his liege in reviewing video recordings of the trios battle outside of Nazarick. He assessed their tactical abilities, magical and aerial combat skills in a report to his master.[65]

At a meeting to discuss about the E-Rantel Magic Research Institute request for more Contaminated Beast specimens, Cocytus suggested sending Lupusregina, CZ and Entoma to the Azerlisia Mountains due to their experience in the area, coining them as Nazarick's "red arms" or "Akazonae". Later at the Christmas party that followed soon, he commented Yuri Alpha in her Christmas Costume, calling her a "Akazonae".[66]

To prepare Nazarick for the upcoming "New Year" event Cocytus conducted a "general cleaning" of his entire floor. When Momonga and his patrol party arrived he reported to his master that he found nothing out of the ordinary. He made a request to Momonga for additional low-quality weapons to be given to the allied lizardmen in an effort to supplement their strength against the many dangers that the demi-humans faced in the Great Lake. Later Cocytus at a general meeting learned that Momonga decided to forgo the caution against the "New Year" as despite affecting the minds of the Floor Guardians to enact a revelry of New Year was not that harmful. Instead a plan to host a Kakushigei Tournament was made to celebrate.

Cocytus volunteered to be a part of White Team and faced Shalltear who was acting as a representative of Red Team in the second match. To display his swordsmanship skills, Cocytus created an ice pillar and used his blade to cut a ice statue of Momonga. However the statue was topped by Shalltear's skill of using a sphere of blood and balancing in on a parasol until landing a magic light spell on Cocytus's statue to create a halo effect. Impressed by the feat, Cocytus admitted that his technique was inferior to Shalltear's creativity, and the mock battle ended in the vampire's victory. Once the tournament ended, Cocytus and the other participants in the Amphitheater found themselves pulled into a Chaos Zone. Cocytus stayed with the non-combatants to safeguard them against Shadows whilst Momonga and a small grouped journeyed to the Bishamonten Shrine to defeat the mastermind. Upon the defeat of who was a copy of Shiramochi-ō, Cocytus finally met with the real Shiro. The 5th Floor Guardian befriended the Ruler of New Year offering to test his sword skills against the latter as they enjoyed the New Year's celebration.[67]

Cocytus would be part of an ambitious plan of Demiurge's to fulfill Momonga's wish to convince two new visitors from another world to accept permanent residence in Nazarick by being as friendly and hospitable as possible that they would want to remain in the dungeon. Since one of the new guests was an insect-type like him, Cocytus acted as a friendly face to the newcomer along with Entoma. Later the 5th Floor Guardian would be part of a mock combat battle, fighting alongside Momonga and the Guardians against the two new guests to test their abilities and regain their levels.[68]

At the announcement of the Sorcerer Kingdom's National Foundation Day Ceremony, Cocytus was excited by the news. And even more about plans for the Sorcerer King Momonga Statue, which would be installed on a floor on Nazarick to the Floor Guardians with the best etiquette and mannerism when interacting with guests to Nazarick. Per request by Demiurge, Cocytus went to the Great Lake and extended an invitation to the lizardmen to attend the foundation ceremony. Once some like Zaryusu Shasha, Crusch Lulu and Shasuryu Shasha accepted, Cocytus stayed in the area to mop up the monsters for the demi-humans.[69]

Whilst everyone was getting ready for the National Foundation DayCeremony, Cocytus had a chance to speak with Mare on the 6th Floor about wearing formal attire or using items left behind by the Supreme Beings. Since having three chieftains leaving the village would deplete the lizardmens' strength, Cocytus assigned his forces to supplement security around the village in their absence. Cocytus would be present in Fake Nazraick at the ceremony commemorating the founding of the Sorcerer Kingdom. Prior to Momonga addressing the lizardmen, Cocytus had passed news about Shasuryu Shasha's expectant fatherhood as well as the upcoming wedding of Zaryusu and Crusch. Later at the banquet he had a conversation with the lizardmen and witnessed the unveiling of the Sorcerer King Momonga Statue. When Momonga decided to install the statue on the 7th Floor, Cocytus accepted the decision, but after hearing that there were several unclaimed prototypes of the statues, he petitioned for one to be install on his floor.[70]

When LittleMass returned and reformed as LittleMasStar to assist in an experiment to determine how humans would react to the introduction of a new hero character and then apply in E-Rantel, Cocytus and Mare were assigned to be the idols new opponents in the second live show. After that Cocytus enjoyed being a member of the audience in the final live show.[71]

Cocytus acted as host on his floor to a returning visitor from another world, who brought some new faces. There he managed to develop a rapport with the newcomers and test their abilities that they possessed. Afterwards he gave his report to Momonga finding that the guests had wind and transmutation abilities.[72]

Cocytus participated in the trial test of Casino Resort Nazarick. After three days playing roulette and baccarat, the Floor Guardian came in second place with the most chips. Using his winnings he selected a hand-made wine cooler made by Albedo as his prize to decorate his living quarters.[73]

To ensure Albedo's safety after she left Nazarick on her mission to collect fabric material, Momonga ordered Cocytus to act as an escort until she reached the Great Lake region. Once Albedo returned with triumphant news that a new locally produced fabric line would soon be in the works, he cheered along with the rest of the Floor Guardians as the accomplishment. [74]

When a [Gate] experiment reconnected Nazarick with the isolated island, an opportunity to expand the Sorcerer Kingdom was presented before the Sorcerer King and Floor Guardians. For the selection of the scouting party, the Pleiades who originally scouted the island were unavailable, Cocytus though reminded everyone that they still had resources such as the Lizardmen Alliance. In his recommendation, the lizardmen were perfect to act as trainers for Aura and Mare in waterside combat. His suggestion was put into action, and later evolved into allowing the lizardmen to be involved in a greater stake of claiming the island for the Kingdom.[75]

After the island was successfully explored and reported to still be unclaimed, Cocytus was assigned by Momonga to supervise the island and the migrating lizardmen that will be taking residence there. When some members of the survey team expressed interest in using the swimsuits again. Momonga considered hosting more swimsuits sports days for training purposes. Cocytus offered a suggestion in hosting them at the Great Lake and allowing the lizardmen to interact with members of Nazarick. Soon after, Cocytus's suggestion was put into action, and was last overseeing the event with Zaryusu and the chieftains. He later excused himself to allow the traveler and the chieftains to have a private word amongst themselves.[76]

During the incident that saw the Great Tomb of Nazarick transform into Nazarick Academy, Cocytus was mentally controlled and made to believe that he was physics professor at the academic institution. In his class he taught students about the Newtonian laws, using his inherent skills as a warrior to explain about moving motion.[77] After school he was found to be the school adviser for the Kendo Club and introduced Narberal, CZ and the transfer student Shalltear to the club.[78]

During an incident which saw a new guest arrive to Nazarick via the Crack, Nazarick lent aid to help the visitor seek his missing lover. It was determined that the missing lover was in the lizardmen village, but apparently it had become under siege by a mass of Chaos Beasts that were created from the subconscious fear of the guests. Cocytus was dispatched to assist, just in time to prevent any casualties.[79]

He was present at a meeting in the Round Table where he learned of the protagonist's plan to organize a Halloween theme event in E-Rantel, as per the misconceived impression it was a ulterior plan of Momonga. After learning the details of the so-called master plan, he voiced his awe at Momonga's genius. Later once the plan was a success he attended a celebration Halloween Festival in Nazarick, wearing his golden adornments.[80]

For the "Sorcerer Kingdom Daily Household Magic Item Fair", Cocytus with the aid of CZ helped propose the Cooling Device, taking inspiration from the refrigerator. Cocytus intended it to be a magic item that cools the home, though the item was still limited due to its size and cooling power.[81]

The approach of New Year's Day saw that many in Nazarick being afflicted with the mental effect. Cocytus was among those who were under its thrall when he was in the Round Table Room, enjoying the kotatsu that appeared even though he was adverse to heat. Pandora's Actor who was unaffected by the mental effect kept Cocytus company to keep an eye on the affected Floor Guardian, being entertained by Cocytus's bawling of wanting a heir in Nazarick to succeed Momonga. When it was discovered that Shiro's touch could break the mental effect, it was tried out on Cocytus. It was partially successful as the effect on Cocytus was too strong.

To enhance his power, through friendship, Shiro dueled Cocytus in a mock battle. The tactic worked and Cocytus was confused as to why he was striking at an ally. Once he was informed of the situation, Cocytus vowed to redeem himself for such a blunder. From his mock battle with Shiro, one of the Seven Lucky God Key Items, the sansageki appeared in his hands as a reward for the trial. Later he accompanied the subjugation team led by Momonga through the Hatsumōde to defeat the new manifested Ruler of New Year. There in the Chaos Zone he was delighted to witness the return of the Takemikazuchi Shrine. Afterwards, to celebrate New Year's Day, Cocytus enjoyed the live performance by LittleMasStar, Narberal and Lupusregina in the Amphitheater.[82]

Cocytus was also for the plan to redevelop a new chocolate product to sell in E-Rantel, after sales slumped. For "New Valentine's Plan", he made a suggestion of how to satisfy a customer's opinion of improving chocolate by chilling it to make it retain its form and flavor. After the release of Golden Chocolate In A Bottle, his idea was passed to Pluton Ainzach via the protagonist, and the use of the Sorcerer Kingdom-made refrigerators to implement. It was well-received and the idea for "Chilled Chocolate" was slated to be the next chocolate product release after the craze for the current item died down.[83]

At a low point, Cocytus was seen drinking at the bar with Demiurge, lamenting on how useless he was contributing to Nazarick. He expressed his disappointment in himself as his other colleagues made great strides using their undercover and public identities to pursue the Sorcerer Kingdom's agenda. This was mostly due to his inhuman appearance which made it difficult do similar missions. Despite Demiurge stating that he provided a critical service of defending the dungeon, Cocytus still desired more opportunity to prove himself to Momonga. Said opportunity came when a meeting was held informing all that the humans in E-Rantel had begun to demand a more sensational chocolate product, leading for the Sorcerer Kingdom to begin development of "Chilled Chocolate".

Cocytus took the opportunity to volunteer himself, citing he was the obvious choice given his skill sin ice magic. Albedo though voiced some doubt on whether he could actually make something or understand human taste. However after Demiurge supported Cocytus in this task, Momonga permitted the Floor Guardian to proceed, and gave him Narberal as an assistant.

Cocytus met Demiurge at the bar to thank him for giving him the opportunity, and later met with Narberal to prepare their plans. In order to gain more information on chocolate making, Cocytus had Narberal interview the chocolate lovers in E-Rantel while he conducted his interviews in Nazarick. While interviewing Cixous and Foire, Pestonya provided the Floor Guardian snacks of monaka to eat, which he learned was made by the cooks of Nazarick after they researching the books in Ashurbanipal. With the aid of Mare, Cocytus received a stack of books to read on all topic related to chocolate and chilling the food. Once he finished reading he met Narberal again at the bar to compare notes. Though they gained a lot of information, there were still unsure of what kind of chocolate item to make. It was then Yuri, Sous-chef and Demiurge encouraged the two to up their knowledge into practice, and offered to have a reenactment of the taste party that was used for the previous chocolate making tasks.

After Narberal tasted each dish provided in the canteen, from the Chocolate Layered Cake, Healthy Blood Marriage, and Crispy Delicious Bites, Cocytus had an idea of what kind of dish to create. He then took Narberal to his floor, where the purest ice was, and using his sword skills, cut an ice statue of Momonga. However his aim was to collect the shaved ice to make a Kakigōri theme dish that he learned about in his books. Using the shaved ice and melted chocolate heated by Narberal's lightning magic they produced Chilled Chocolate Confectionary which then became a limited specialty produce in E-Rantel. After the mission, Cocytus had celebratory drinks with Demiurge on his achievement. He was met by Narberal who he had agreed to spend time with to show him his swordplay.[84]

Cocytus would attend a meeting of the Floor Guardians, the protagonist and Momonga to discuss about what little they knew of Shalltear's attackers. With field operations becoming more dangerous with the threat of these unknown attackers, he listened to the protagonist's proposal to concentrate efforts on finding what caused the Incident by seeking the knowledge from older races that lived in the Azerlisia Mountains. It was then agreed by Momonga that a mission would be sent by the Sorcerer Kingdom to the Dwarf Kingdom, officially to open trade relations, and to acquire information.

Cocytus and Mare were selected to become escorts for the delegation. Cocytus and the others with the help of Zenberu arrived at the city of Feo Raidho but found it abandoned. They by chance found a lone dwarf named Bigosa who had fled from where the dwarves had retreated, the city of Feo Jera. Though the dwarf doubted that the city which he fled still stood, and had reservations of guiding the party there, seeing Cocytus and his weapon convinced the dwarf that their odds of survival were favorable.

However by the time they reached Feo Jera, they found the Dwarven Army defeated and the city in ruins by the Giant Lizards. After they found a survivor who told them that the dwarves fled to Feo Berkana to seek the protection of the Frost Dragons, the delegation they used Mare's magic to reach the city. The city was being besieged by monsters forcing Mare to intervene while Cocytus and the others hurried to meet the dwarven leaders and Frost Dragons' meeting.

The ruling dragon refused the offer of an alliance with the Sorcerer Kingdom as it did the same when the Regency Council offered the dwarves' services. It was the belief by the dragons that whatever caused the Incident could not be stopped and resigned to wait for the end of the world. After being called weak, by the dragon, Cocytus challenged it to a battle. The Floor Guardian defeated the dragon with a single blow, making the it reconsider calling Cocytus weak. And once Mare defeated all the Giant Lizards and returned to join the meeting, it confirmed to the Frost Dragon that aligning itself and its family with Nazarick would be beneficial.[85]

When revelations were uncovered that the protagonist was not an actual creation of the Supreme Beings but a creation of the Sea of Possibilities and was now being targeted by Enhela Read Gahi, Cocytus concluded that the homunculus could not stay in Nazarick. Although the protagonist was not truly one of denizens of Nazarick, Cocytus and many of the Floor Guardians could not fully treat him as an outsider. To Cocytus the protagonist was still a legacy of the Supreme Beings born from an idea of theirs and the loyalty he held to Momonga was unquestionable.[86]

During the time of Renner Theiere Chardelon Ryle Vaiself induction into Nazarick, Cocytus and Shalltear viewed Albedo and the human princess head to Carne Village via the Mirror of Remote Viewing. Later after Renner faked her death and used the Fallen Seed to turn into an imp, Cocytus acted as referee in a mock duel between Albedo and the new demon. Afterwards he attended the banquet, welcoming Renner as the newest member of Nazarick.[87]

At the live show of a mock battle between the idol group LittleMasStar and the rock band Βγδth in the Amphitheater, Cocytus was among the crowd cheering the rock band on.[88]

While at his dwelling in Snowball Earth, Cocytus was visited by Renner and Slimeko, as the two came to him seeking his aid in building an ice room for the lizardmen on the isolated island claimed by the Sorcerer Kingdom so they could preserve their fish efficiently. Having already heard of the ice room's approval Cocytus was willing to help to reward the lizardmen. Another issue he wanted to contribute was that the idol statue that lizardmen requested. The Floor Guardian had an idea for that, and showed the two women his skill in creating an ice block and carving it into an beautiful image of Momonga. Despite it's near exact likeness to Momonga, Cocytus felt it was lacking.

He wanted to include the ice statue in the ice room, though Slimeko pointed out that Momonga had disapproved on including statues on his likeness to be given to the lizardmen. Before he hopes could be dashed, Renner suggested that they could convince their master otherwise, by pointing out the benefits of a statue of Momonga being worshipped by the lizardmen. Later at a meeting of the Floor Guardians, Cocytus led with the proposal, and his argument with Renner's prompting was enough to convince the rest of the Floor Guardians of his idea and with it along with Momonga.

After Renner, returned from procuring some materials in the Azerlisia Mountains, Cocytus accompanied her, Climb and Slimeko back to the island with the ice to create the ice room. At the island he was greeted with much fanfare by the lizardmen. He set the ice room in a cave scouted by Renner, and placed ice within it. Before creating the statue, they found a nest of slimes forcing the group to fight them.

Once the site was monster free, Cocytus carved an ice statue of Momonga. Renner feeling apologetic for failing to properly secure the ice room site, tried to offer her apologies to the Floor Guardian. Cocytus refused her to bow her head in apology but instead asked her to offer a prayer to the idol to show the lizardmen that it offered protection.

Later on the mission briefing, before the other Floor Guardians and Momonga, when Renner reported the incident with the slime nest, Cocytus covered for her by exemplifying how courageous she and Climb were in defending the ice room. He eventually attended a Christmas party on the 6th Floor, and approached Renner and Climb, hailing them to be the bridge between them and their subordinate lizardmen.[89]

Later during New Year's Eve, Cocytus with the rest of the Floor Guardians and Momonga contemplated on the final missing Seven Lucky God Key Item that needed to be earned to defeat Shiramochi-ō. Even the past New Year's, which Cocytus had trouble remembering due to the mental effect, he believed that they needed to hurry the process of eliminating the White Mochi King before he became a threat to Nazarick. Though plans were complicated due to the relationship between their ally Shiro and the White Mochi King.

When the next New Year's activity was decided, the "first sunrise", Momonga expressed his wish to come along the trip so he could investigate the lizardmen and the Dwarf Kingdom. Though Cocytus offered to come along with Momonga he was declined as he insisted on going there personally. In a private meeting with his fellow peers, they discussed why Momonga refused Cocytus as an escort. Though it was believed Momonga did not want to include Cocytus due to the risk of mental effect while in Shiro's vicinity. And given his relationship with the boy from the Sea of Possibilities, it was a tactical move.

Still Cocytus was a bit jealous of Shiro's bond with his master though admitted that Momonga's care was necessary as a new assassin from the Crack could emerge hence the necessity to keep an eye on Shiro at all times. Cocytus was present to see his master and his expedition off. And later was there when he returned. Momonga's completion of the "first sunrise" helped to manifest the biwa, the last key item. As it appeared, Cocytus distinctly remembered accompanying Momonga through a hazy New Year's day. He participated in the raid on the Bishamonten Shrine and witnessed the White Mochi King'd defeat at Shiro's hand, ending the threat for another year.[90]

Cocytus was in attendance in an emergency meeting that was addressing the miasma crisis that affected every major city in the Tripartite Alliance. When the protagonist chose to head to try and save E-Rantel, it started a discussion on the benefits and costs for expending resources to a city that faced repeated tragedies. Even that the suspected culprit for the miasma, Enhela Read Gahi, was on the loose somewhere, Momonga believed that they should allow the protagonist to play hero to bait Enhela out to gain more information which Cocytus agreed. Likewise he favored in curing those affected by the miasma, despite potentially causing them to level into stronger beings, as it would be a waste.

After Enhela declared his origins and allegiance to the Devourer of the Nine Worlds, and inferring that the protagonist was also an associate, Cocytus found himself in a hard place to judge his former compatriot. Cocytus would later evacuate Nazarick, at Momonga's orders after the dungeon was taken over by Enhela. When faced with the usurper of the domain of the Supreme Beings, Cocytus relished a chance to destroy the priest.[91]

Trivia

  • The name "Cocytus" comes from one of the five rivers encircling the underworld in Greek mythology.
    • It is also a reference to Dante Alighieri's Inferno, in which Cocytus (also known as Treachery) is the ninth and final layer of Hell. It is referred to as a frozen lake that houses all of humanity's traitors and those who committed acts of complex fraud.
  • In the Web Novel, Cocytus is put in charge of the security from the 9th Floor to the 10th Floor. Cocytus commands a troop of armored beetle warriors. Additionally, he is the creation of Blue Planet.
  • Cocytus has four mercenary-type NPCs that serve as his vessels, which consist of three insectoids: a mantis, ant, and another fighter-type insect, and a giant brain.
  • If not for the battle with the lizardmen, it was believed by Cocytus that he would have, without question, accepted the order of wiping away his shame and that of Nazarick with slaughter.
  • Ironically, Cocytus shares a lot of similarities with with the undead Nerubian king know as Anub'arak; from World of Warcraft. Both Being insectoid-like humanoids, who can serve under a undead master, control frost and ice, and have honor despite their appearance. When the author was asked if this was intentional, his response was "I didn't even know such a character existed, this is complete coincidence."
  • Cocytus often dislikes being referred to as a pervert.
